"My first cover shot! Kidwell showed up in New England for a local race. We had friend in the ski school and got us on the freestyle kicker jumps as long as we wore a helmet. See the bike helmet. In the background you can see Jeff Brushie, another legend, with a fruity headband." -Trevor Graves
Terry Kidwell is the original freestyle king of snowboarding. In the eighties, when Sims was the main force in snowboarding on the west coast, Terry Kidwell and mini shred (Shaun Palmer) were the dudes! Damien Sanders was the fluorescent hard booter that threw backflips off of everything, but Kidwell showed up in the Sims video doing McTwists. Insane!
Back in the eighties, all the pro snowboarders (all 19 of them) did all the contests, because that's where everyone who was way into snowboarding would go. There weren't a ton of contests, but usually racing was among the events. Halfpipes were more like a series of pushed up bumpy hips in alternation. Everyone was just hyped on shredding, in jeans or powder pants or in wetsuits. Just go and shred.
