How to pick the right goggle lens
Wednesday, October 26th, 2011
Many people pick goggles out by what looks cool. We aren't saying looking cool isn't important but there is more to which goggle lens is right for you.All goggle lenses are not created equal. At EXIT we only sell top quality product so the quality of anything you buy will be great. Goggle lenses aren't equal because they are designed to let different amounts of light through to your eyes. Generally, clear lenses allow the most light through while a tinted polarized lens will let the least light through.
Under different conditions you will want a different lens. At night for example, you will want a lens such as clear or yellow, because they allow the maximum amount of light to pass through. On bright sunny days you will want a dark lens that lets far less light through. Having a mirrored lens is also a good idea on sunny days because it reflects more light away from your eyes. As you can see from the chart of Oakley's lens tints below, Black Iridium Polarized only lets 9% of the light through and would be a good option for very bright mid day sun. For normal and overcast days you should use something in the middle like a Grey or amber.
We are using Oakley's lens tints here but the same principles work regardless of what brand of googles you have. All the brands we carry, from Airblaster to VonZipper have accessory lens available. Accessory lenses allow you to only need one goggle frame and switch out the lenses as need each day you ride.
Check out all our current goggles and accessory lenses and figure out what it right for you.
