How to Do a Griptape Cut-out.
Sunday, February 17th, 2008
Supplies:
- A sheet of grip
- A good sharp razor blade or Exacto knife (something with a handle works best)
- Clear packing tape
- A permanent marker
- First, cut a piece of the clear packing tape so it will fit over the design on your board that you want to cut out. You may need to cut a few pieces of tape and stick them together to cover the design. Hold the tape so that the sticky side is up, now fold a small amount of the longer ends underneath and stick those ends of the tape to the board so that the tape covers the graphic (sticky side up!).
- Using the permanent marker, on the sticky side of the tape, trace over the design. Once you're done with that, take your sheet of grip and (without peeling the brown backing off of it) place it over the board and the packing tape, just as you would if you were going to grip your board. Make sure that the grip tape is covering the entire board. Press the grip down where the packing tape is to ensure a good hold. Flip the grip tape over and you should have a backwards image of the graphic stuck to the underside of your grip. Once the design is cut out and viewed from the top it will be the right way.
- Now, using the Exacto knife or razor blade, cut out the shape of the design. Depending on the surface that you're working on, you might want to put a piece of cardboard between the grip and counter top when making the cut out. This will help to protect the blade and the counter top. A sharper blade will be easier to use and you'll get a smoother cut out.
- Once the cut out is complete, tear off the backing of the grip tape, line the cut out up with the design on the board and stick the grip to the board. Making a good cut out can be difficult, you're best off trying a simple one first and working your way up.
