Jake Burton started the company in 1977 and produced the backhill, a narrow board with single strap bindings and a rope and handle attached to use the nose. Experimentations with surfboard construction using foam cores and fiberglass eventually gave way to wood. Life and sherd now begins with Burton Snowboards.
